Thrace is an area in southeastern Europe consisting of northeastern Greece, southern Bulgaria, parts of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Turkey's snippet of European territory. Thrace is bordered by the Black Sea, Aegean Sea, and the Sea of Marmara. It was once home to a tribe called the Thracians who spoke their own Indo-European language. Unfortunately for them, they occupied a prime piece of strategic real estate and were overrun by Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, and Ottomans. After World War I and the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922, most of Thrace's Aegean coast was given to Greece. The famous rebel slave Spartacus was a Thracian. ephealy's w/u on the Thracians contains more detailed information on their early history and culture.
