The thermosphere is the fourth layer of earth's atmosphere, in between the mesosphere and exosphere. The thin air means that temperature can fluctuate greatly. When exposed to the sun, temperatures in the thermosphere can reach 2700ºF (1500ºC). Most man-made satellites, including the space shuttle, orbit in the thermosphere.
