As the Catholic Church rose, and the importance of martyrs and saints became more central to the religion, people clung to the remains of these saints and martyrs as symbols of divinity. Thus began the cult of relics. Churches began to use relics, that is, the remains of these saints, as points in their favor, to attract members to their congregation. In fact, to this day, nearly every Catholic church is started with a relic.
