The droning highway never sleeps
a mile down the asphalt run
blue jays with their sapphire plumage
cry to greet the newborn sun.

Across the park, beyond the fence
forgotten dog begins to whine
while cardinals fill the dawn with twitters
perched within a dying pine.

A group of crows high in the tree
add to the cacophony
and sparrows, while unseen to me
delight the world with melody.

The semi's brakes, a blaring horn
the black squirrel eating a walnut
cool wind through leaves about to drop
the clatter of door closing shut

This is the orchestra of dawn
the symphony of waking
bolero of the coming day
Carpe Diem; it's for the taking
