A high-pitched, slowly fading away throbbing which went off every time Mega Man died. This was the exact same sound in every single one of the NES Mega Man games.

Usually accompanied by a series of pulsating white circles emitting in all eight compass directions from the point at which Mega Man was killed.

This sound is irrevocably embedded deep into the collective subconscious of almost everyone born in the 80s.

Note: in Mega Man 2, these circles changed color depending on which weapon was selected at the time. A source of fun was to blow yourself up with each weapon, looking for the neatest combination, which happened to be Heat Man's Atomic Flame.
