British broadsheet newspaper. Started life in 1821 as the Manchester Guardian (for the full details see http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/PRguardian.htm which I have no intention of copying here). Right from the start it had a reputation as something of a left-wing liberal newspaper, it changed its name in 1959 and two years later moved its primary offices to London.

The paper (actually the main weekday title within the Guardian Publishing Group) is run under the control of a trust to prevent it falling into the hands of intefering proprietors. Widely nicknamed The Grauniad because of a reputation for printing typos, although with the advent of computer-based publishing it is now no worse than any other paper.
