I just read in the New York Review of Books that somebody revved up a computer and did a thorough textual analysis of Beowulf, and the upshot is that the Beowulf Poet probably didn't write it. It appears to have been written by somebody else entirely. Who? Naturally, that's the issue we'll have to address next.
