Before I go explaining where it came from, I will explain what it means.
Tenkaichi Budoukai translated to English means "The World's Best Martial Arts Tournament".
Broken Down:
Ten - Heavens or Sky
ka - Under or Beneath
ichi - First or Best
Bu - Martial Arts
dou - Way of
kai - Meeting
Now that you know that, I'll go explaining what it is.
The tournaments were held in the fantasy world of Dragonball and Dragonball Z. During the two shows, there were 8 tournaments which started at the 21st tournament. They were supposed to be held every three years on May 7th, but there were a couple times when the tournaments were postponed due to unforseen circumstances. 11 years passed between the 23rd and 24th Budoukais as the the arena was rebuilt, 7 years passed between the 24th and 25th because of the Cell Game, and 4 years passed between the 25th and 26th because of Majin Buu.
I only have information on the 21st and the 22nd tournaments, but if I find more or watch the episodes, I shall add to this.
