Short for temporary workers; people who are temporarily employed by an organization to get a project off the ground or serve as lackeys and go-fers for the paid staff who are too busy working on a stock offering.

The standard name for an environment variable whose value is the name of a directory that is okay to store temp files in. As far as I know, it is used in DOS, Windows NT, and unixes, but there are probably others.
