Techno Rebels is a book about
techno music. Dan Sicko, a member of the
Hyperreal music community and also the
313 mailing list, traces the history of techno back to its roots in
Italo-disco,
funk,
electro,
Kraftwerk, and the early 80's
Detroit high school club scene.
Techno Rebels is unique in that it does not explore "electronica". For the most part, house, happy hardcore, trance, and trip-hop are left completely out, unless they somehow relate to TECHNO from DETROIT.
Sicko goes far above and beyond most other authors in this category. He has interviewed many people integral to the aforementioned high school dance party scene, early techno, and late techno. There are ancient pictures of the Belleville Three (Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, and Juan Atkins), Cybersonik (Richie Hawtin (with hair) and [Daniel Bell), and Techno Boulevard (the old headquarters of the Transmat, Metroplex and KMS record labels), old Underground Resistance party flyers, and newer pictures of techno and post-rock personages such as Ken Ishii and Tortoise.
This is an important entry in pop music literature.
