Tammuz is also sort of the prototype of christ. He is the living reincarnation of his father, Nimrod (founder of Babylon) who impregnates Ishtar after his (Nimrod's) death, and his birth is a virgin birth. Drinking Tammuz's blood and eating his flesh were the rituals by which he was remembered and worshipped.

Tham"muz (?), Tam"muz (?), n. [Heb. thammuz.]

A deity among the ancient Syrians, in honor of whom the Hebrew idolatresses held an annual lamentation. This deity has been conjectured to be the same with the Phenician Adon, or Adonis.

The fourth month of the Jewish ecclesiastical year, -- supposed to correspond nearly with our month of July.
