A solution can be described as supersaturated when so much of a chemical has been dissolved
in a solution, that no more
can be dissolved. Here is a fun
experiment you can try anywhere
to verify the basic properties of a supersaturated solution:
1) Get a cup of steaming hot coffee
2)Pour a whole lot of sugar in it (the only way to enjoy the morning beverage).
3)Stir it up
4)Notice that the amount of sugar has decreased, and there is still some clumps of sugar left at the bottom of the cup. Congradulations, you've just added more sugar to your coffee than can be dissolved for that amount of water. Huzzah for supersaturation!
