The Linux distribution that I (and 70% of all other German Linux users) use. Very nice. Topic of perennial flame wars on German Linux newsgroups because many elitist people believe that what the majority uses must automatically be crap. Beginning with release 6.4, they also ship decent GNOME packages. If six CDs are too much for you, you can also get SuSE on DVD.

Alas, SuSE is a bit KDE-centric. SuSE GmbH, the Nuremberg-based company producing this distribution, hire KDE hackers on sight. But it's easy to forgive them their pro-KDE bias when one looks at how much money they've poured into the development of the Linux kernel, XFree86 and such.

The name SuSE is an acronym of the German branch's full name: "Gesellschaft für Software- und Systementwicklung mbH", which translates to "Society for software and systems development, Ltd."

When they got big, they created a stock corporation, the SuSE AG, which owns the local branches, as well as the separate companies that provice support services.
