Well all's not well but I'm told that it'll all be quite nice
you'll be drowned in boots like Mafia but your feet will still float like Christ's
and I'll be damned, they were right
I'm drowning upside down, my feet afloat like Christ's
I'm in heaven trying to figure out which stack
they're going to stuff us atheists into when Peter and his monkey laugh
and I laugh with them, I'm not sure what at
they point and say "we'll keep you in the back
polishing halos, baking manna and gas"
well some guy comes in looking a bit like everyone I ever seen
he moves just like crisco disco breath 100% listerine
he says looking at something else but directing everything to me
anytime anyone gets on their knees to pray well it makes my telephone ring
and I'll be damned... he said "you were right
no one's running this whole thing"
he had a theory too
he said that "god takes care of himself
and you of you"
it's all nice on ice alright and it's not day and it's not night but it's all nice on ice alright

Styrofoam Boots is the ending song on the cd version of The Lonesome Crowded West. Modest Mouse play again with traditional song structures; with the song beginning in a upbeat country gait until 2:40 when the bass and drums come in. From this point the tempo continues to speed up until the end of the song. Isaac Brock takes us on a ramble/spiritual journey, not unusual for a Modest Mouse song. The image of Styrofoam boots is made clear in the line "you'll be drowned in boots like Mafia but your feet will still float like Christ's'. After this he dies and goes to heaven where "some guy comes in looking a bit like everyone I ever seen" who either is God referring to himself in the third person or just somebody helping run shit. He is told that he was right and that "God takes care of himself and you of you", a seemingly deist approach to Christianity. In the end his parting words of wisdom are It's all nice on ice meaning: Shit's always better when put on ice (Ex: Disney on Ice), Anybody can walk on water when its frozen (even with styrofoam or concrete boots). But probably Isaac is talking about crystal meth or speed (ICE) because you don't notice night and day your just awake. Anyways this song is classic Modest Mouse and the listener can interpret it however.
