Central character in James Joyce's books Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses. Very much of Stephen is based on Joyce himself. Stephen's name comes form St. Stephen, the first martyr, and Daedalus (Greek for "cunning artificer"), the skilled creator of, among other things, the Labyrinth in Greek mythology.
