Steeplechase Park was the third of Coney Island's great amusement parks. From 1897 to 1964, it existed in one form or another. Centerpiece was the Steeplechase ride, where you held on to a metal horse and careened down a track. Once over, you had to step through the Insanitarium, where you'd be subjected to humiliations galore in front of an audience. Once you were through, though, you'd go sit in that audience and laugh at the next poor fool to come along.
