The act of determining what the observer's velocity and position are in relation to fixed, known external references (or external references with a known vector and timebase). Used in navigation; typically with celestial referents. The U.S. Trident II SLBM uses a starfinder and inertial navigation to perform state vector updates during its flight, particularly when transitioning between phases such as boost to coast.
