Lesser ape. up to 3 feet. 20 to 45 pounds (Sumatran male is largest). Color is jet black, with long, profuse, shaggy hair.
Can be found in the upper canopies in the forested regions of Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula (500 to 2500 feet).

Diet is mainly fruits, leaves and other plant products.

A monogamous pair with several (1-3) offspring. Single births ith a gestation of 7-8 months. Young are born quite small, (6 ounces) and longer hair usually doesn't appear until 2 to 3 years of age. Mature at 8 years, at which point they leave their parents.

Si"a*mang` (?), n. [Malay siamang.] Zool.

A gibbon (Hylobates syndactylus), native of Sumatra. It has the second and third toes partially united by a web.
