After WWII all those Japanese Canadians who had been interned were given the choice of "going back" to Japan, or staying east of the Rocky Mountains. This was enforced on anyone of Japanese decent, even those who were born in Canada. This was officially to discurage any future renewal of hostilities with Japan and unofficially to placate the then very racist (mostly Anti-Asian) British Columbia.
