The Scottish Prison Service, analogous to HM Prison Service in England & Wales, is today an agency of the Scottish Executive Justice Department. Until the Scottish Executive took over, it was an Executive Agency of the Scottish Home & Health Department. The Scottish Prison Service is charged with responsibility for the remaining of, until recently, Scotland's 22 prisons, Remand Institutions, and Young Offenders' Institutions.
It has an annual budget of more than Stg. 200 million, is responsible for more than 6,000 prisoners, and employs some 5,000 people (around 200 of those are based at its Headquarters at South Gyle in Edinburgh). It also has a training college and HM Central Stores.
