Larry Niven does a good job of using plain vanilla science fiction archetypical technology for military applications.

Examples include:

the use of a powerful comms laser as a weapon
Chasing in 2 identical ships, each ship can use its comms laser to heat up the other's shield. If sufficient power can be directed, the ships will gradually heat up. There is an advantage in being the first one to use this tactic.
fusion drive as a weapon
You shouldn't use your fusion drive inside an atmosphere, or over a big city, say. But what happens if you do?
