On the
Queen Charlotte Islands, about 100km off the west coast of
British Columbia,
Canada, lies a small community. Sandspit is actually located on a sand spit, the end of which is the main airport on the islands. Both the front and back side of Sandspit have beautiful crescent beaches stretching a couple km.
Logging has always been the bread and butter in Sandspit, but because of politics, the softwood market, and a lack of
cutblocks, the town is shrinking fast. Because it is the closest town to
Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Herritage Site and has easy access to some good sports fishing grounds, tourism is slowly taking over as the main industry, but with a season of only 4 months, it's hard to keep families in town making it hard for the school and grocery store to stay open in the winter.
