The mild-mannered unsuspecting "hero" of "North by Northwest". As Thornhill was played by Cary Grant, Alfred Hitchcock took pleasure in putting him into various unsettling and sometimes ludicruous scenarios. The sight of the normally suave and debonair Grant being misunderstood, drunk, dishevelled, ridiculed, chased, sprawled in the dirt, and wearing a suit too small for him (and marred by dandruff besides) - amongst other situations - adds a whole other level of enjoyment to this classic film.
