A little-known gem of Victorian fiction (published in 1888) by Mrs. Humphry Ward.

The title character, an ardent and unusually gifted Church of England clergyman loses his faith in Christianity. Though hardly an orthodox Anglican herself, the author was highly sympathetic to the anguish that Robert Elsmere and his (unequivocably orthodox and evangelical) wife experience as a result.
