The Right Livelihood Award is an award to "honour and support those offering practical and exemplary answers to the crucial problems facing the world today". Known as the "Alternative Nobel Prize", 75 people from 60 different countries have received the award since it was conceived by Jacob von Uexkull in 1980.

Another purpose of the award is to stimulate debate about social values and goals, bringing people in different fields together for the common good. Nominees for the award must be honest, treating both people and the environment with respect. The awards are presented annually at a ceremony in the Swedish Parliament the day before the Nobel Prize ceremony. There are usually 4 recipients of the award each year.
