Smiths ballad from their debut album about sexual desires and the loss of youth and innocence. The sexual imagery is overt but clothed in a laconic melody that lends the track a romantic aura.

The music was written by Johnny Marr and the lyrics by Morrissey (the modus operandi of the Smiths). Apparent sources for some of the lyrics have been identified, including:
"reel around the cafe"
"like butterflies on pins"
From 'By Grand Central Station I sat down and wept" by Elizabeth Smart and

"I dreamt about you last night, and I fell out of bed twice"
From 'A Taste of Honey' by Shelagh Delaney.

excerpt:

It's time the tale were told,
Of how you took a child,
And you made him old,
You made him old
