The first major commercial distrobution of linux that hit the shelves hard. Released by Red Hat software, it was the first "easy to use, easy to install" linux operating system that tried to be for beginner users.

Many people today attribute the sudden success of linux to the commercialization of red hat. I think its good karma, and code.
