Recovery Wadding is flame-retardant paper wadding which is packed in a model rocket between the engine and the parachute or streamer. When the engine's fuel is exhausted, a charge is fired through the body of the rocket in order to eject the nose cone and parachute from the top to aid in a safe landing. The recovery wadding prevents the ejection charge from scorching or burning the recovery device.
