Rafael Calderón was president of Costa Rica from 1940 to 1944, a charismatic leader with a populist style.

During his tenure in office, Calderón proved himself an energetic legislator and reformer, passing numerous laws - mostly along Christian-democratic lines. He also founded the new university and many other educational institutions.
