Rachael Field was born on September 19, 1894, in New York City. She grew up in Massachusetts. As an adult she had a summer home on Sutton's Island, one of the "Cranberry Isles." The Sutton's Island community is very proud of this.

Field was a novelist, editor, poet, playwright and children's author. In 1918, she won the Drama League of America prize. She worked for many years in the editorial department of the Famous Players, a silent film company. She was the first woman to win the Newbery, for Hitty: Her First Hundred Years. Her major adult novel, All This and Heaven Too, was a runaway best seller in 1938, and a bigtime Hollywood movie.

Field died in 1942, after "an operation.".
