An organism which is proterandrous or protandrous is first functionally male, and then functionally female. This phenomenon happens in some plants, when the flowers first produce pollen, and then become receptive to being pollinated.
In modern botanical parlance, the term "protandrous" is used. Also, "protandry" is the name of the phenomenon.
