A hormone manufactured by the adrenal glands in men and women. In women, progesterone is also produced in the ovaries after ovulation and in the placenta during pregnancy. Progesterone is responsible for many functions throughout the body and is also used by the body to produce other hormones.

Progesterone imbalance during the menstrual cycle can cause *ahem* interesting behavior. Or so I'm told.

progesterone: pregnancy hormone, one of the two sex hormones chiefly characteristic of the female. It is produced by the ovary in the corpus luteum, following ovulation, and also by the placenta during pregnancy. The metabolic pathway of hormone production in the body leads from progesterone to androgen to estrogen.
