A branch of Mathematics that measures the likelihood that an event will occur. The theory of probability was first developed by Blaise Pascal in the 17th cent. as a means of solving gambling problems. Later Pierre LaPlace contributed to wit: Given an experiment (Example: a coin toss), each possible outcome is assigned a number, called a probability measure, that corresponds to its chance of occurring.
