Pell Station is an
orbital dock and city above the planet Pell, in
C.J. Cherryh's
Company Wars universe. Pell is notable for two reasons: One, it is the only station held as
sovereign territory by the
Merchanters' Alliance, and Two, it is in early times the only station orbiting a world inhabited by
indigenous intelligent life. Called the Downers by station residents (since they come from
Downbelow Station, the surface outpost) and
hisa by themselves, these gentle folk serve on Pell Station as labor voluntarily in order to make the trip into orbit.
For excellent stories regarding Pell and its universe, I recommend reading Downbelow Station, Merchanter's Luck, Tripoint, and Finity's End. If you want some backplot, read Heavy Time and Hellburner. All are by C.J. Cherryh, and all are *well* worth the read.
