The first Tyrant of Athens, was one of the leaders of the Athenian war against Megara over the island of Salamis, and one of the heroes of that war. tried three times to take control of Athens by force but in the first two times succeded only for short periods of time. Finally took control of the city in 546 BCE. He was a very popular ruler who managed to solve the great economic crisis of Athens at that time, and brought prosperity and progress in all fields of life. In his days the Iliad and Odyssey, were finally written down and got their final version (which might explain the large role Nestor recieves in the Iliad as Peisistratus claimed to be Nestor's descendant). Peisistratus died in 528 BCE, and was inherited by his two sons, Hippias and Hipparchus.
