His
knickers and
tam o'shanter cap made
Payne Stewart one of the most recognizable
players in
golf. His
talent for the game and his
passion made him one of the most respected.
He was the backbone of the Ryder Cup when he played on three winning teams. He won 18 times around the world, but made his name in America with three major championships -- the last on an unforgettable day in June of 1999 when he celebrated his second U.S. Open victory.
Stewart was one of six people killed Monday, October 25, 1999, when a Learjet he was aboard flew uncontrolled for hours and crashed in South Dakota. He will be sorely missed, by those who did not know him and, even more so, by his two small children.
