Paul Woakes was a games programmer in the 80s and early 90s. He is best remembered for the "Mercenary" series of games, the first of which appeared in 1985 for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum and other 8-bit micros. This game was fairly revolutionary in that the player could explore the wire-frame environment in first-person perspective. Two sequels followed for the Atari ST and Amiga - "Damocles" and "Mercenary 3", which employed filled vector graphics, and gave the player more freedom to move around an entire solar system, exploring its planets and the cities on them. An enhanced PC version was in the works, but was shelved, and nothing has been heard of from Mr Woakes since. But still the Mercenary series holds a special place in the hearts of those who played it.
