Palatino is a typeface, or as many computer people say, a font, and has actually been one of the most widely used typefaces for the last half century, and is available for just about every platform available.

It was designed by Hermann Zapf (whose last name should ring a bell or two with typeface enthusiasts), for the Stempel foundry in 1948. The typeface is named after the famous 16th century writer and calligrapher Giovanbattista Palatino.
