First opened in 1875. Housed Enrico Caruso on the night of April 17-18, 1906, when the fabled San Francisco earthquake and fire occured. He swore never to return to San Francisco. The hotel was gutted, and did not reopen until 1909. Has a Maxfield Parrish mural in the Pied Piper Bar. The Garden Court dining room is the elegant heart of the establishment, with marble columns and stained glass dome. Was once managed by my grandfather, Babe Thacker. Now owned and run by the Sheraton Hotel chain.
