Old red sandstone is a sedimentary rock, laid down in the Devonian series. It was deposited in flash floods in deserts. It gets its distinctive red coloration from iron. A striking example of old red sandstone can be seen at Arbroath cliffs. Also, many of the buildings in Arbroath have been built out of this rock, for example Arbroath Abbey.
