A great jazz impresario; a documentor of the music via his indie labels, from Norgran, to Verve, to Pablo. Arguably, one could also call him a pimp who sold conservative black music to conservative white audiences, or call him a capitalist pig - didn't Pablo Records get its name because Granz sold one of his Picassos to finance the start-up? I doubt that the icons in his stable could afford one. Whatever one's views, his works (and loyalty) are to be treasured.
