A fairly large gauge of wire (imperial measurement) used in fencing, that was considered by some to be the backbone of New Zealand farming.

No.8 wire has reached the status of a cultural icon, and is celebrated as one of thse things that inventive New Zealanders can make anything from. The other was a kerosene (or 'kero') tin.
