Songwriter, bassist, back-to-basics touchstone of rock. Became a producer, by default, at the founding of Stiff Records, after a pub rock career with Brinsley Schwartz. At Stiff, produced some seminal (and some deservedly obscure) punk 45s, and began his long tenure with Elvis Costello (the Brinsleys did the original "Peace, Love, and Understanding"). Has many solo albums, plus collaborations with Dave Edmunds ("Cruel to Be Kind", Elvis' "Girls Talk") and their co-op band Rockpile.
