Basically Nancy Drew was a female version of The Hardy Boys. She was the heroine in a series of mystery novels for children.
Created in 1930 by Edward Stratemeyer who was already responsible for creating other popular children's series such as The Hardy Boys, Nancy had her first adventure in The Secret of the Old Clock. Since then she has been featured in over 350 mysteries, all of which penned under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene. The first Nancy Drew stories were written by Mildred Wirt Benson.
Very much a role model, she bucked gender stereotypes and showed she was just as capable at handling herself as any boy. She lives in River Heights with her father, Carson Drew, a criminal attorney, and their housekeeper Hannah Gruen. Nancy's mother died when she was three, and her father is often not at home, so this gives her ample time without parental supervision to solve various mysteries. She isn't alone in her adventures, as she has her friends Bess Marvin and George Fayne as well as her boyfriend Ned Nickerson, to help her out.
Thanks to http://www.nancydrew.com for this info, and to JudyT for the Carolyn Keene/Mildred Wirt Benson tip. I'm personally totally clueless when it comes to Nancy, as I much preferred The Three Investigators for my adolescent detective fix.

Don't Let This Happen To You!
Whenever I hear this song, I always think of the boxes of my old toys sitting in my parent's basement. I'll probably never be able to part with my myriad of Transformers, Lego sets, and stuffed animals that are still sitting there, waiting for me to rescue them.
