Early 50s. She's new to NYC; she'd lived only in rural small towns or the "urban" overgrown podunk of college years. An older sister, by then a City Lass of long standing, invites her to a party in Harlem or some other Manhattan locale; they take the subway there from their Bronx apartment.

They arrive, they mingle, they party. Miles, later in the evening, makes his entrance, with his expensive conk and immaculate suit. Ladies to his left and right. He takes a hit from a joint...

Mum: "I thought he was a pimp or a drug dealer."

He was Miles.
