Mulled Wine is red wine, heated, sweetened and spiced. It's lovely after a long walk on a cold winter's day. I've added a quick recipe below, but there are many variations, so feel free to add your own writeup!

  • 2 bottles of (cheap) red wine
  • Orange slices (or Lemon)
  • Juniper and/or Fennel
  • 6 to 12 cloves
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Brandy (to taste)
  • Sugar or Honey to sweeten

Put all the ingredients, except the sugar, in a large saucepan and stir. Heat on a low heat for approximately ten minutes, but make sure you don't let the wine boil. Sweeten to taste and then spoon or pour into heatproof coffee glasses and serve hot.

You can also cover and steep the wine overnight after heating it if you like, but only add the sugar before serving.

Other recipes use tap water to mix with the wine, ginger to add to the mix and other various spices.

The best part about mulled wine is that you can experiment as much as you like with it; the red wine isn't too expensive so you can afford mistakes.
