Track 11 from Dyslexic Fish's debut album 'Mission: Inappropriate'

Music by Dyslexic Fish
Lyrics by Glenn Sarangapany

A tribute to the godfather of soul, James Brown, who (arguably) took the soul sounds of the sixties, added a little extra sex, and created what we now call 'funk'. Brown's songwriting and amazing live shows make him a perfect role model for any aspiring musician...

Or do they?

Brown was notorious for the mistreatment of the members of his band - the 'JB's' - and had a policy of docking his band members half a night's pay for an on-stage screw-up, and for firing them on the second mistake. He certainly did know how to educate those funky fools, as mentioned in the second verse of this song.

Besides being a drug-addicted nitpicking psychopath, Brown's other real signature was his complete inability to make any damn sense when he said anything. As reflected in the pre-chorus lyrics of this song, very few can understand what the hell he's trying to say through the barrage of grunts and yelps that make up his everyday speech.

The version of the bridge shown here is the version on the album. Sometimes replaced in live performances with the 'get up, get on up' chant from Brown's hit 'Sex Machine'. The song is also usually introduced live with the 'can I count it off?' sequence from 'Sex Machine'.

twisted rhythms on the wall
they don't bother him at all
he knows
you got to do it funky or
you just don't do it at all
the godfather only sees one thing
in his mind
you gotta get your groove on baby
gotta get your groove on baby

talk his way
maybe nobody gonna know anything you say
when you talk his way
talk his way
baby you got nothing left to hide
when you talk his way

Mr. Brown, Mr. Brown, gonna show you how to move
from the morning til the evening underneath that funky moon
Mr. Brown, Mr. Brown gonna teach you how to be smooth
if you wanna get some loving then you got to get your groove on.

on the stage he knows that nothing at all is wrong
because he knows just how to get a party going on
dock the pay if they got something left to lose
he knows just how to educate those funky fools

talk his way
maybe nobody gonna know anything you say
when you talk his way
talk his way
baby you got nothing left to hide
when you talk his way

ring a ring a roses
a pocket full of posies
a tissue a tissue
we all
we gonna get right down

Mr Brown, Mr Brown, gonna show you how to move,
from the morning to the evening underneath that funky moon,
Mr Brown, Mr Brown, gonna teach you how to be smooth
if you wanna get some loving then you got to get your groove on.
