Each morning there is a sound
I cannot imitate. Wherever I
go I hear it. Sometimes it is
so loud I am deaf. It is neither
melody nor harmony. It neither
leads nor follows. The sound is
self-evidant & only fades away
towards noon.

It croons a baby to sleep in her carriage.
She is pushed by her mother
who ignores me
as we pass.

It hums between a young man & woman sitting on a doorstep.
They are passing a cup of coffee between them
with the abstracted air of lovers.
They pay me little attention.

It yowls near a cat.
Once she was white
but that was long ago
when she had an owner
who wouldn't let her roam.
Now she is quite gray
& stares at me
warily as I walk.

It howls at me from electric wires.
They vibrate a sound
high, wild, free
& tauntingly calling
I AM THE SUM OF ALL POSSIBILITY.
I AM WHERE YOU HEAR ME & WHERE YOU DO NOT.
I AM SINGULAR & EVERYWHERE PRESENT
.
