Mollie Sugden is none less than a
comedic staple in
British television. Born Mary Sugden in Yorkshire, England on 21 July 1922, she attended school at the Guildhall School of Music and Dance. She was married to actor
William Moore (d. 2000) and has twin sons, Robert and Simon.

Mollie is most recognizable as Mrs. Slocombe (1972-1985) on the hit britcom Are You Being Served?. The character's official name was Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Jennifer Rachel Yiddell Abergavenny Slocombe, as a clue to her active, if not scandalous, past. Mrs. Slocombe was well-known for her ever-changing hair color, snooty grandstanding attitude and, of course, the unforgettable "pussy" double-entendre when referring to her beloved cat.
Ms. Sugden has received numerous cat-related items from fans over the years, but insists she's more of a dog person.
Mollie's first known television role is on the show Hugh and I in 1962. Her first notable role was as pivotal character Nellie Harvey on Coronation Street, from 1969-1976. Also see her in the Cluedo series as the third Mrs. White (1991)!
While comedy is Mollie's most frequent cup of tea, she is also known to dabble in drama. She's credited in Maggie (1964), The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1970), and 1972 miniseries Emma as Mrs. Goddard.
