Seventh brightest star in the Orion constellation, Mintaka is the left star in the prominent "belt" of the constellation. It is a second magnitude star, and is approximately 915 light years away. Mintaka is actually a binary star, consisting of a class B and class O star, extremely close together. Eventually these will explode violently into supernovae because of their proximity and mass.
